Hip stiffness after sitting, back pain after a long day standing, and simply wanting to walk or work without paying for it later are questions Dr. Jesus Bernal hears constantly from patients at MueveFlex Wellness Center in Tucson. Below, he answers the specific questions people ask him most often in the clinic, in his own words, from why hips feel tight when you stand up to what to do about pain caused by repetitive work.
“Why do my hips hurt or feel stiff when I stand up after sitting?”
After sitting, your hips must quickly change from being bent and supported to standing, stabilizing, and moving your entire body forward. Before standing, move your ankles, straighten your legs gently, sit tall, and shift your weight. Move your bottom to the edge of the seat to avoid bending forward as you stand. Once upright, pause for a moment and take a few comfortable steps rather than immediately racing away. Regular walking, hip mobility, leg strengthening, and assisted stretching may help improve this transition. At MueveFlex, we work with the hips as part of a complete movement chain that includes the lower back, thighs, knees, calves, and feet. Your hips are not independent contractors. They are members of a team, and when one area stops contributing, another area usually ends up working overtime.
“How can I walk longer without my back, hips, or legs hurting?”
Build walking capacity gradually. Start with a distance or amount of time that your body handles reasonably well. Repeat it consistently, then increase it little by little. Do NOT wait until you are completely exhausted before turning around, unless you have arranged for someone to carry you home. Warm up and cool down are a must, wear supportive shoes (or even better walk barefoot on soft natural surfaces like soft cool sand, dirt, or grass), choose a manageable surface, and take planned movement or recovery breaks. Strengthening your legs and hips and improving flexibility can also make walking feel more efficient. At MueveFlex, we look at the movement needed for walking from the head and lower back all the way down to the feet. Our goal is to help you return to shopping, traveling, exercising, going to the places and gatherings that matter to you, and enjoying life with greater confidence. We want you independent and not relying on canes or crutches or anyone to hold your hand except out of pure love and enjoyment.
“Why does my back hurt after standing or working all day?”
Standing all day is not the same as moving all day. Remaining in one position, leaning over a work surface, twisting repeatedly, reaching, lifting, or favoring one leg can fatigue the body. By the end of the day, your back may simply be announcing that it has worked overtime without proper breaks. Change your stance regularly. Place one foot on a small, elevated support for short periods and switch between feet every 20 minutes, alternate tasks, bring your work closer, wear appropriate footwear, and take short walking or stretching breaks. At MueveFlex, we consider what you do for a living because a teacher, hairstylist, mechanic, housekeeper, office worker, and construction worker all place different demands on the body. Your wellness plan should make sense specifically for your real workday, not a cookie-cutter approach.
“What can I do for pain and stiffness caused by repetitive work?”
Begin by changing the repetition whenever possible. Alternate tasks, switch positions, bring tools closer, reduce unnecessary reaching, and take short recovery breaks. A two-minute movement break performed regularly may be more useful than waiting until the end of the day when your body is already protesting. Stretch the areas held in one position and strengthen the areas required to perform the work. This means going to the gym or lifting weights to focus on body areas used at work. Recovery also includes sleep, hydration, nutrition, and allowing heavily used muscles time to recharge. At MueveFlex, we help identify patterns created by repetitive work and provide assisted stretching based on those demands. Everyone is a little different. One session can feel wonderful, but it cannot negotiate a permanent peace treaty with forty hours of unchanged strain. Your daily habits and work setup must participate in the solution.
